Clayton, like many of the communities in the greater triangle region of North Carolina has seen explosive growth and change in recent years. The town's population more than doubled in the span of 2000 to 2010. Clayton is now the largest town in Johnston County. As with the other towns of the eastern triangle, Clayton has a mix of small town charm and suburban amenities. Residents include both locals and commuters into Raleigh and other triangle towns and cities. Located along the state-owned North Carolina Railroad corridor, Clayton is home of a variety of industry today and a heritage as an early railroad town.

For bankruptcy purposes, Clayton and Johnston County are within the Raleigh division of the US Bankruptcy Court for Eastern District of North Carolina. Each Bankruptcy case filed by and for residents of Clayton will be heard in downtown Raleigh. The historic Century Station Federal Building, in downtown Raleigh at 300 Fayetteville Street (next to the Wake County courthouse), is now the home for all court hearings and 341 meetings of creditors in Raleigh.
